MORE than 20,000 people are expected at this year's Beveridge Park Community Festival including bikers from across the world eager to celebrate Kirkcaldy's motorcyling heritage.
Hundreds of bikes from all eras will be on show as enthusiasts attempt to recreate the feel of the Scottish Road Races which gripped residents every summer for decades.

Although no racing will take place, they plan to bring the 'sights and smells' of the legendary event back to the park.

And they will be joined by a host of musicians and entertainers determined to make the annual Kirkcaldy festival one of the most successful yet.

Hugh Ward, president of Kirkcaldy and District Motor Club (KDMC), said: "There will be a lot of nostalgia as we'll have a gathering of many people who simply haven't been together for a very long time.

"We're really looking forward to it and suspect it will be quite an emotional day for many people."

The world has Kirkcaldy to thank for the introduction of the Scottish Road Races, an annual event which began in 1948, seeing thousands of motorcyclists across the years race in the town's Beveridge Park.

Due to the determination of KDMC - celebrating 60 years of the races this year - Fife Council was persuaded to begin the event, allowing world famous races to be staged for 40 years in Kirkcaldy before health and safety laws saw them move to Knockhill in 1988.

Legendary bikers marked lifetime achievements in the town and famous figures, including the young BBC commentator Murray Walker, were regulars as residents excitedly crammed into the park to soak up the action.

Hugh said: "There is a surprising amount of people who don't appreciate Kirkcaldy's contribution to the world motorcycle scene though.

''There is also a lost generation, too young to remember the races taking place in Beveridge Park before they stopped in the 1980s."

But for those who hold fond memories of watching the summer races, they will be taken back to the era this weekend as bikers do their best to recreate the event by showing bikes and running their engines, bringing to life the 'sights and smells'.

The original pit area will also be rebuilt, next to the Rugby Club, as will the famous start line.

Bikers from as far as Australia are already understood to be making their way to Kirkcaldy and the celebrations have received strong attention in motorcycle publications.

Beveridge Park Community Festival incorporates the Scottish Road Races event, as well as the Bavarian Music and Beer Festival, and is organised by Beveridge Park Community Events Group.
