13-year-old Jaime scales the heights
KIRKCALDY climber Jaime Davidson is setting her sights high after securing her first British title at the age of 13.

The Balwearie High School pupil took gold in her age group at the British Climbing Series in Edinburgh last month, beating off competition from across the country for the confident win.

And now she is aiming for the top, hoping that one day she will make it to the world championships to represent her country.

"I love the way the sport makes me feel, particularly if I succeed at a really difficult climb," she said.

The skilled teenager, from the Strathallan estate, began climbing at the age of six and last month's victory is a sign of what she hopes could lead to a professional career in the sport.

She won the under-14s title in Edinburgh, but was only eligible to compete at the prestigious championship after making it through three gruelling qualifying rounds earlier this year - taking gold at each.

She said: "It was so exciting. I had been training really hard since December for the events and felt I did everything I possibly could.
"I couldn't have done any better and I expected to win."

But this is not the first major title for the Kirkcaldy teenager who is twice holder of the Scottish Youth Championship, won this year and last. It is however undoubtedly her greatest success, particularly owing to her making it to the finals on four occasions but never securing the title.

Jaime also has a cabinet bulging with trophies from many other competitions across Britain - a sign of her commitment and success in the sport.

"Climbing is so fun and I enjoy it so much," she said.

At school Jaime enjoys drama and PE, but her passion lies with climbing for which she trains four nights a week at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena - the world's biggest indoor climbing centre.

Her dad Bill and her mum Karen are also keen climbers, having developed an interest in the sport through their daughter.

Jaime keeps her fitness at an optimum level by training with her mum, a fitness instructor, on her spare evenings and aside from holding a British title, boasts the ability to beat her school friends in arm wrestles.

"I can even beat boys with my left arm," she said.
