Building bricks of history with LEGO at Aberdour Castle

Aberdour Castle is one of a number of sites across Scotland to showcase history in LEGO form.

The 12-month exhibition programme, which kicks off at the Fife castle from now until April 22, features model brick-work by LEGO artist Warren Elsmore, and hopes to connect with visitors of all ages during the Year of Young People 2018.

The Brick Wonders and Brick History Exhibitions, created by a talented team of designers and artists, focus on pivotal moments and amazing sights from around the globe, featuring everything from the seven wonders of the ancient world, scientific discoveries from the Big Bang Theory to DNA, and recent history from mobile phones to the moon landings.

Warren explained: “We love transforming the world around us into LEGO scenes.

“It’s a fun way to translate history into a medium that everyone can understand and relate to, especially young people. Forget dry lists of kings or endless battle dates – this is history brought to life.

“It’s great when we see visitors making that instant connection with our projects and hope it will inspire them to learn even more about our history.”

The partnership between Historic Environment Scotland and Warren follows the success of the Brick City exhibition at Fort George, which saw over 2600 visitors marvel at the mini creation – a 41 per cent rise in footfall from the previous year.

Rebecca Bailey, head of education and outreach at HES, said: “LEGO bricks are unique in their appeal, having been a top-selling toy for over 50 years so it’s great for us to be able to showcase history in such an engaging way.

“The artistic Brick City display instantly piqued the interest of our visitors at Fort George, and we’re sure these eye-catching exhibitions will be a big attraction throughout 2018 for young people - and the big kids too.”

The models will also visit Arbroath Abbey, Glasgow Cathedral, Stirling Castle and Fort George during the year.

Entry to the exhibition is included in the normal admission price of the sites.
